Lunch Poems at SFU is a unique vibrant exchange of poetic ideas and cadence held the third Wednesday of every month, noon to 1 pm, in the Teck Gallery at Simon Fraser University's Harbour Centre Campus. Former Poet Laureate of the United States Hass is a UC Berkeley professor who has made important contributions in poetry, criticism, and translation. We were joined as well by Anjail Rashida Ahmad, also an A & T professor and poet. There is the sound of god beating inside my heart, which is a strange sound since he does not exist. Adding a poem to lunch puts some poetry in your day and gives you something great to read while you eat. This month at the Poetry Room we are entering sixties Manhattan through the playful, provocative poetry of Frank O' Hara. And so some readers may pick up “Lunch Poems” (first published in 1964) after seeing it praised as an emblematic cultural document of mid-twentieth century America. Kenn Nesbitt is the author of several collections of funny poetry for kids, including My Hippo Has the Hiccups, Revenge of the Lunch Ladies, and The Aliens Have Landed at Our School! Nesbitt has published a number of books, including The Tighty-Whitey Spider and Revenge of the Lunch Ladies (2007). I make poetry and doodles on brown paper bags for close friends and family.
